Sending emails, looking at important documents or sharing content - thanks to modern smartphone and tablet technology this is now possible even when you are not at your work desk. More and more tasks can be done from mobile devices. One topic with great relevance is printing from smartphones or tablets. With modern printer technology and apps from well-known manufacturers, mobile printing is no longer a problem. We explain how it works and what requirements towards the printer have to be met.
Printing from Mobile Devices - Which requirements have to be met?
In order to be able to print from your mobile phone, you need a current smartphone. A current Android or iOS software version (depending on the device used) may also play an important role. In most cases, printing from a mobile phone works via an app. These apps can be installed and used on most smartphones. An up-to-date system version is also important to ensure data security while printing from a smartphone.
2. Connections between Printer and Mobile Device
When it comes to the basic requirements for printing from a mobile phone, the printer is also an important factor. The printer and the smartphone must have a common basis for a fast and wireless communication. In other words, printing from a smartphone is only possible when the printer provides a wireless interface. There are several connection options.
When purchasing a printer, you should pay attention to the "Wi-Fi" property. Use our online printer consultant and find the right printer for your requirements:
To be able to print from a smartphone via WLAN, printer and smarthone have to be on the same network. All devices on a WLAN network can communicate with each other wirelessly. Data transfer takes only a few seconds and within the Wi-Fi range you are free to move around. You can print from one room even if the printer is in another room. Printer Manufacturers offer different versions and options. Some HP printers for example offer the option to connecting to a created WLAN network.
Another technology for smartphones and tablets is bluetooth. Bluetooth connectivity can be found in many printers, is used regularly and is an interesting alternative to a WLAN network. With bluetooth two devices are connected directly with one another. No further technology or cables are necessary. However, you should note that the bluetooth range is limited to a small area. The current bluetooth standard only reaches a maximum range of approx. 10 meters under optimal conditions. Printing from a smartphone via bluetooth from a neighboring room may already be problematic.
The complete service agreement (MPS contract) entitles you to purchase consumables at discounted prices during the entire term of the full service contract and to enjoy considerable savings. (Dependent on your printer manufacturer)
For the first 12 months you receive a price protection, which means that during this time you are protected against possible price increases. If the daily rate is cheaper, you pay even less.
You only pay for what you order.
How we calculate the cost of supplies
For all of our information on how many consumables you will consume, we take into account the
relevant ISO standards
.
These ISO standards and therefore our calculations assume that you have an A4 page with the
standard coverage of 5% with black-white or 20% coverage for color-printers.
Research has shown that the average coverage for black-and-white pages is around 5%.
The average page coverage for color prints is usually higher and is 20% (5% for black and one color and for the three colors - cyan, magenta and yellow).
If you print a much higher page coverage with your printouts, you can assume that
you are actually consuming more consumables than our calculations would indicate.
Sample calculation to determine the amount of toner cartridges consumed:
You are interested in a black-and-white printer, and state your monthly printing of 300 black-and-white pages over the
the period of 36 months. The printer is a new device and already has a
toner cartridge, suitable for 2,000 pages. The replacment toner, to be reordered, is for 5,000 pages as per the
specifications.
300 pages x 36 months = 10,800 pages in total.
10,800 pages minus 2,000 pages (included in the printer price) results in 8,800 pages.
So you will be ordering or consuming 1.76 toner cartridges within 36 months.
ISO 19752 for b / w laser printers: Determines the toner consumption of black-and-white laser printers
ISO 19798 for Color Laser Printers: The standard for color toner cartridges
ISO 24711 for inkjet printers: The process of how rich the ink modules of inkjet printers are.
Significantly lower prices for hardware and consumables
You can buy or discount Supplies at normal online store prices, including price protection for 12 months if you sign up for an MPS contract for your printer. You have no disadvantages when printing more or less. You only pay for what you order.
Your total printing cost
In 36 months at 300 mono pages and 150 color pages monthly.

3. How to print from Devices with Android Operating System
On the vast and highly competitive market of smartphones and tablets, devices with an Android operating system occupy a strong position. The Android operating system can be found on smartphones and tablets of numerous manufacturers. With such a popular technology, developing a methode of printing from mobile devices is a matter of course. Two variants can be differentiated:
3.1 Apps from Printer Manufacturers
Almost all major printer manufacturers such as HP, Canon, Epson or Brother, offer an in-house app for mobile printing. Thanks to an app which can be easily downloaded from the Google Play Store, Android devices and printers are able to communicate with each other.
Advantages of printing via App
Location-independent printing
Apps from printer manufacturers offer additional functions such as image editing, etc.
User-friendliness
High data security standards
3.2 Google Cloud Print
Google's Cloud Print service is diffrent. It makes printing possible without an app . Starting from Android version 4.4 and up, Google Cloud Print is integrated into the operating system. If the printer has been set up with Google's print service, an internet connection is the only requirement for printing. Even outside the local area network, printing from a smartphone or tablat works as long as both devices are online. Older printer models can also be used via the Google Cloud Print service if a computer with a Google Chrome browser is in use. The corresponding printer can be connected to the Google Cloud Print service via the Google Chrome browser even when the printer does not support this modern technology.
You can find a function similar to Google Cloud Print on your iPhone or iPad. AirPrint has only one disadvantage compared to Google's solution. In order to use AirPrint not only a compatible printer is required, but also both, the printer and iOS device must be connected to the same network and be within the range limit. Otherwise AirPrint cannot process the print request and the print job cannot be done. On the other hand, printing with AirPrint via an iPhone, iPad or iPod is very user-friendly. Simply tap on the release symbol, call up the print options, choose AirPrint and after selecting the printer and selecting print options, the document will be printed.
5. Printing Apps - Easy and fast
Most well-known printer manufacturers offer in-house printing apps for easy and fast printing from smartphones and tablets. Some of the best-known apps you will find below.
The printer manufacturer HP is well-known and, of course, also offers its own printing app. A freeHP ePrint download for Android smartphones and tablets can be found in the Google Play Store. For iOS device you have to use the HP All-in-One Printer Remote App, because the ePrint app for iOS is no longer available. Both apps allow you to make settings for a print job and offer you various options for printer management. You can add a printer on all compatible devices within your own network.
Canon's Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY App is available in both, the Google Play Store and the iTunes Store. The app makes it possible for users to print from their smartphone and is compadible to many Canon printer models. Android and iOS users alike have the option to print either via a network or via a separate cloud service from Canon. Canon's printing app also offers many diffrent print options. The manufacturer provides a list of compatible printers on its website.
The Epson iPrintapp can be installed for free on Android-based smartphones as well as on devices with an iOS operating system. Thanks to the remote printing function, network-independent printing is possible. The only requirement is an internet connection. You should note that not all printers support this technology. Via the Epson app users can also scann documents from many printer models. Printing from your own network is not a problem with most Epson printers, but it is still worth taking a look at the list of compatible models.
The Brother iPrint & Scan App reveals its essential functions at first glance: Both printing from a smartphone and scanning documents are possible. You can install the app for free on Android and iOS smartphones. Printing from a home network or via a separate cloud service is possible. And in order not to lose touch with the competition, extensive setting options for printing are available. A connecting to a new printer can also be established via the Brother app for smartphones and tablets.
5.5 Third-Party Printing Apps - An alternative
Third-party printing apps for Android as well as iOS devices are available for download in a wide variety. Not all offers are for free, many developers charge for their alternative and manufacturer independent app. One of the best known and at the same time easy to use versions for fast printing via your smartphone, is the "PrinterShare" app. Initially, this app is free, but in order to be able to use all functions and full performance, an upgrade to a premium version is necessary. The catch: the premium version is not exactly low cost and the print jobs are processed via Google's Cloud Print web service. In addition, network-independent printing is only possible if additional software is installed on the computer connected to the printer.
6. Printing from Smartphones or Tablets - A conclusion
Every printer manufacturer offers a printing app thanks to which printing from a smartphone or tablet has never been easier. Easy to use settings make printing via apps very user-freindly. Keeping in mind the wide selection and technical possibilities offered by system-internal technologies, it does not seem necessary to download third-party apps that often have to be payed for.
